Contrary to popular belief, your bag and shoes no longer need to be the same color. What counts today is consistency in finishes and tones. Here is the method, in four rules.
Rule #1: Only one metallic finish
This is the most important rule, and the easiest to apply. Your jewelry, your bag’s clasp, your belt buckle, and the metallic details on your shoes should all follow the same direction: either all gold or all silver. No one notices it consciously, but everyone sees it when they don't match.
Rule #2: Warm with warm, cool with cool
Gold goes with warm tones: camel, cognac, brown, ecru, khaki, red. Silver goes with cool tones: black, gray, navy, white, blue. This is why a camel bag with gold rings always works, and why a gray bag leans more towards silver.
Rule #3: Bag and shoes, same family, not same color
Forget exact matching, which looks dated. Simply stay within the same family of tones: a camel bag with cognac shoes, a black bag with charcoal gray ankle boots. The eye perceives the coherence without the uniform effect.
Rule #4: Adjust jewelry according to your top
Crew neck: opt for earrings and leave the neck bare. V-neck or open shirt: this is where a pendant really makes sense. Long, loose sleeves: save your bracelets for a short-sleeved or rolled-up top, otherwise they will disappear.
Three combinations that always work
- Warm. Camel bag, cognac shoes, gold jewelry, brown leather strap watch.
- Cool. Black bag, black ankle boots, silver jewelry, steel mesh watch.
- Contrasted. Colorful bag, neutral shoes, subtle jewelry matching the finish of the bag's clasp.
The most frequent mistakes
- Mixing gold and silver inadvertently. Intentional mixing exists, but it must be visible on several pieces, not just one.
- Matching the bag to the shoes to the exact shade. It’s too heavy and makes the outfit look stiff.
- Layering jewelry, chain bags, and buckled shoes. Too much metal at once.
- Forgetting the belt. Its buckle counts as much as a piece of jewelry in the overall balance.
The ten-second check
In front of the mirror, look for every metallic point in your outfit: earrings, necklace, watch, rings, bag clasp, belt buckle, shoe details. If they are all from the same family, you're good to go. If not, remove the intruder.
